What is a Medicare Advantage insurance plan?

A Medicare Advantage insurance plan is offered by a private company that contracts with the federal government to provide all your Part A (hospital) and Part B (doctor and other medical) benefits. Most Medicare Advantage plans also offer prescription drug coverage as well.

In comparison to Original Medicare, there are many advantages and benefits when choosing a Medicare Advantage plan.

What are the advantages of a Medicare Advantage plan?

When choosing your Medicare coverage, you may select Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage, also known as Medicare Part C. Medicare Advantage plans cover all the services that Original Medicare covers besides hospice care. Even if you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, Original Medicare covers hospice care. On top of these standard Medicare benefits, many Medicare Advantage plans include extra benefits such as dental care, eyeglasses, and gym or fitness programs. Most Medicare Advantage plans include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D).

All-in-One Coverage Options

Original Medicare only offers hospital insurance and medical insurance. You would need to purchase a separate standalone Medicare Part D plan for prescription drug coverage and Medigap for supplemental coverage to pay for expenses not covered by Medicare. With Medicare Advantage, you get everything that Original Medicare offers plus more – all in one plan.

Better Services and Better Value

Medicare Advantage plans provide more services, more coordinated care and more value than Original Medicare. Read more about the pros of choosing a Medicare Advantage plan when considering your Medicare options.

How to find the best Medicare Advantage plan for you

Many factors go into deciding what plan works best for you. Ask yourself what kind of coverage you are looking for. Call around and ask different companies what they offer. Consider your long-term health care needs and think about which plan will suit your preference. Determine how much you are willing to spend on your health care on a monthly and yearly basis. Monthly premiums, yearly deductibles, and copays may be included in your Medicare Advantage plan costs. Some plans may charge a couple hundred dollars for premium and deductibles and other plans might not charge you anything. Make sure to take into consideration the out-of-pocket max for your plan.
